When Should You Upgrade Your Electrical Panel?
Common signs an older or undersized panel may be worth having evaluated, and what to think about before upgrading.
Why panel capacity matters
Your electrical panel is the central point that distributes power to every circuit in your home. Its age and capacity determine how much your home can safely run at once — and how much room there is to add new circuits for things like a renovated kitchen, a home office, or an EV charger.
Panels installed decades ago were sized for the electrical demand of their time, which was typically far lower than a modern household's. As homes add more major appliances, electronics, and equipment, older panels can become a limiting factor.
Signs worth paying attention to
A few patterns tend to come up repeatedly when homeowners look into a panel upgrade: breakers that trip more often than they used to, especially across multiple circuits; a panel that is completely full with no room for new breakers; visible age, rust, or corrosion on the panel itself; and simply not knowing the panel's age or condition, particularly after buying an older home.
None of these signs automatically mean a panel is unsafe, but they are common reasons homeowners request an evaluation.
Planning ahead for future needs
Panel upgrades are also frequently planned proactively — ahead of a renovation, before purchasing an EV, or when adding a generator. Because a panel upgrade is disruptive to schedule around, many homeowners choose to handle it once rather than upgrading in smaller stages.
